Dear Hogwarts Students,

Did you tell someone at home what house you are going to be in this year! Thank-you Miss Sabourin for orchestrating all the details that helped to bring the Sorting Hat to Rosendale! That is no easy feat!!

Here is a video of us meeting the talking hat... click here

Here are our houses and a few of us getting sorted (I will email individual pictures!)

Autumn is FINALLY in the air!

Dear First Graders,

It was nice and cool in our room today, finally feeling that amazing fall weather. We have been learning about our new season through books, brainpopjr, and even poems! Today we worked on using a strategy we like to call "mind movie" (visualize) to picture what is happening in our minds.  We then created a picture that matched!

I got to see some of you at Pizza Night!! A fun time was had by all that could make it.

Bucket Fillers

Dear Friends,

We have been learning about being kind, how our actions and words affect how others feel, and about our invisible buckets that we all carry.

Did you tell someone at home about the book we read:

I enjoyed seeing your faces light up when you read the kind words your friends had to say about you.  I hope you were able to share your bucket with someone from home!

Our caterpillar also emerged as a butterfly! We set Flutter free on Tuesday and there have been multiple sightings on the playground.

Becoming Authors!

Dear Friends,

It was so nice to see how you are all excited to share your stories with your friends. Our inspiration pages we made at home are great tools for helping us come up with ideas. We have been working hard on telling our reader about something from our lives through detailed pictures and some words! Our writing time consists of a mini lesson, time to write, and back on the carpet for sharing. Here are some candids of some of us showing our stories with our carpet buddy!

We had our second mystery reader, Assistant Superintendent Ms. Gemmill! She read a powerful story titled One by Kathryn Otoshi. We talked about how everyone matters and we should treat everyone nicely. She left the book for us to have so we will be revisiting throughout the year!
We are looking for mystery readers for Wednesday, Oct. 4, 11, and 25 from 8:30-8:45. Email me if your interested!

Just for fun pictures:

Enjoy the long weekend!

Back To School Night

Dear First Graders,

I can't wait to meet your parent(s) at Back to School Night tonight! I will be sharing all the wonderful learning we are already doing as well as what we will work on this year!

Here are some great candids of us working on reading to someone. We did a fantastic job working as a team. We earned five extra minutes of recess for having amazing first grade habits!

We have also been growing our brain by learning about the word optimism and the power of "YET!"

Inspiration!

Dear First Graders,

This week is flying by! We are already "Rocking in Our School Shoes!"

So far, we have received our very own white wash boards that we will use during math and word study so that we all can participate!

We have started getting ready to become authors! Many of us have already completed our first home assignment and brought back our "inspiration" collages that will help us come up with stories to write. Here are two examples. (Directions to the right)

We also had our first mystery reader! Wednesday from 8:30-8:45 is a time where we will schedule parents, grandparents, older siblings, etc. to come read their favorite picture book to our class. E-mail when your ready to come in and we can schedule a time!

Fabulous First Week

Dear First Graders,

I don't even know where to begin!  We had such a wonderful ending to our week. I continue to be impressed with your great first grade habits.

Yesterday, I loved hearing about the pictures, stories, and toys that you brought to share! Here are some action shots. We did a nice job asking great questions to learn more about our friends. Our star helper starts Monday (calendar to the right). You will each get a day to bring in an item from home to share over the next two months. We will be working on stretching our ideas to tell at least three things about what we bring!

Did you tell mom and dad about the surprise I brought in today?!?! A monarch butterfly chrysalis. I found three caterpillars on my mother-in-laws flower farm in Saratoga and we will get to watch one of them transform into a butterfly! Super exciting.

We also had a surprise visit from Dr. Tangorra (Superintendent) and Miss Gemmill (Assistant Superintendent). They were very impressed with what hard workers we already are.

This would be a great weekend to start on your first home assignment, your writing idea collage. Here is my example... (digital copy of the assignment to the right; Launch Beginning Letter)
