Publishing Party and Chick Celebration

Dear First Graders,

What could be better then a Friday of fun! We had our publishing party, chick celebration, and Ice-pop day all in one!  WHOA!

I continue to be amazed at how much you have grown as authors. Your small moment pieces are strong.  Great work!

Happy Memorial Day!

Hatching Day!

Dear First Graders,

Can you believe we are the caregivers for 11 healthy baby chicks! We had an amazing hatch this year. Here are some action shots of us spending some time with the chicks this afternoon.

We are also doing a nice job polishing our stories and getting ready for our writing celebration this Friday!

ABC countdown begins...

Dear First Graders,

Can you believe we have begun our ABC countdown (see May folder for another copy)! Today was B day... read with a buddy.

We partnered up with Mrs. Neufeld's third grade class. They are also discovering life cycles, zooming in on the life cycle of a butterfly. We did a great job reading a life cycle book with our buddy and getting to observe the butterflies.

A magical week...

Dear First Graders,

This week has been very exciting. We have been learning about being healthy and jumping through P.E.  I'm looking forward to joining our class for some good exercise today!

This week, we also began our chapter book read aloud My Father's Dragon. We are learning about the power of book titles and chapter titles in helping us to be the boss of our reading! We are also asking ourselves, Who is telling the story? Is it a narrator or a character in the book? This is a great question to add to your book talks at home.

I was very impressed with our Mind Movies we created for the dragon that Elmer is going to save.

Careful Observations

Dear First Graders,

You were real scientists today, looking carefully at the "inside" of the eggs.  We used a technique called candling to get a glimpse inside.  We saw the air sac, veins, embryo (mostly the eye!), and yolk.    Today was egg day 8.  Only 13 more days till hatching day!

Here we are at our science stations on Monday!

We did a lot of singing today at our assembly. We learned about slavery and the underground railroad through the songs that the slaves sang. We also learned some of the sign language used to communicate!

We are one square away from the finish line of our reading incentive!  Keep reading and enjoy the gorgeous weather!
