Severe Storm Presentations

Dear Meteorologists,

You really impressed our guests and me with your hard work and expertise in our severe weather unit. I just got done reading through your reflections and many of you were able to identify an area that was difficult and an area that you excelled in! Many of you stated that researching and paraphrasing was difficult.  This is a new skill for many of us and one we will continue to do throughout the year!

I want to thank all the people that were able to make it in during this busy time of the year. For those who were not able to, we captured a few good shots (but I will take one with each group and their boards later this week).

We will be assembling our survival kits that we are donating towards the end of the week. Each child was assigned one item to bring from home. The kids brainstormed as a group and each picked one thing (your child should know their item, it as recorded on a letter sent home last week). Everything teams agreed on are things that could be purchased at the Dollar Tree and ranged from a water bottle, to flashlight, batteries, and a first aide "kit" (which could be a ziplock with a few band-aids).

We are moving in a different direction for some of our upcoming Friday Challenges where the kids are taking the lead to teach a skill. This week, we had some friends teach others how to make loom bracelets.  Everyone was successful and worked together!  Upcoming will be origami, friendship bracelets, and more!

 Happy Holidays!

A friend worth melting for...

Dear Third Graders,

This week was all about working as a team to accomplish tasks from our Friday Challenge, Monday edition where we built snowmen...

to playing memory match with new landform words and their definition....

to teaching our friends how to play Dreidel and enjoying the game together!

We also put our desks into groups so that we are sitting with our severe weather report teams.  This week we will be working hard to get ready for our presentations on Friday.

We topped the week off with our Dress Like a Library Book Character day!

Here is our bulletin board.  We have a few friends still finishing their pictures! We made snowflakes out of coffee filters.

Incredibly Thankful

Dear Third Graders,

I continue to be very thankful for working with such a wonderful group of learners. I love your enthusiasm for learning, your patience with me acclimating to calling a group of students third graders NOT first, and all your unique qualities.

Before we left for break, we shared our published paragraphs! We will be using what we learned in this unit to help us work on our severe weather report. The date and time will be posted in our December Newsletter!

In geography, we are learning about land and water formations. We worked in small groups to sort pictures and discuss the new vocabulary.

In science, we are learning about the water cycle. Here we are observing to process in small groups.  It was very exciting.

PJ Day

Dear Third Graders,

We sure know how to rock PJ day!

We also celebrated two November Birthdays last week!!

In reading, we are focusing on reading informational texts. Right now, we are working on identifying the main idea and the supporting details. We worked in buddies using our "Boxes and Bullets" strategy to take notes.

In social studies, we continue to learn about geography and different types of maps. We have zoomed in on physical, political, climate, and resource (product) maps.  We looked through an atlas with a buddy to find some of these maps and then shared with the class.

Lastly, our Friday Challenge was working with our group to figure out the unknown BIG word...

FRIENDSHIP

We then discussed how we can show friendship.

Wow, that was a busy week!

Bear Hugs,
