Publishing Party

Dear First Graders,

I learned so much from your How To books! Here are some photos from our publishing party. We hope you learned how to make and/or do some new things today!

In math, we have been working on place value with numbers to 20. We have been working on comparing numbers. Here is a fun song that helps us remember our greater than/ less than symbols.

Here we are working in teams to make numbers and using popsicle sticks to create the symbols!

The Run

Dear First Graders,

Ava, Chase and I tackled the cold weather to help Mr. D as he works towards his workout goals!

Don't forget our publishing party is Friday at 1:40!  Hope to see you there.

Also, we go outside unless it is below 14. Please send hat, gloves, boots and snow pants. It can be very uncomfortable for the kids out in the cold. We go out at 11:00.

Fun Friday

Dear Parents,

We had an assembly today that taught us that math can be fun and exciting. Many of us were stumped by this question, "Which is heavier, a 2 pound bag of potatoes or a 2 pound bag of feathers?"

We also started talking more about place value. We are using these longs and cubes to help us create double digit numbers, but they are also fun to build with as well!!

The G2G work will be happening at River Road Park, on Tuesday, December 13th, at 3:15 p.m. We are going to run a mile on the trail in River Road Park, and all are welcome to join us!

Hope to see you there!

Spanish

Dear First Graders,

It has been a busy two days getting back into the routine of what it means to be a learner at Rosendale. We can do it!

Yesterday, we enjoyed hearing all about one another's Thanksgiving! We even got to celebrate a friends birthday!

Today, Michael's mom came in and taught us a little Spanish.  Did you show off some of the words we learned to someone at home?

Shape Battleship!

Dear First Graders,

You first graders did a great job using positional and 3D shape names to play battleship in partners. Parents, one team had to tell the other team what to do and the goal was to make two identical structures.  It was no easy feat! Cylinder and sphere seem to be the trickiest for us!

See some of us in action: Shape Battleship

We also had a sibling as our mystery reader! She shared two great Thanksgiving stories.

In computers, we had fun using some great Thanksgiving websites. Click here: Turkey Day

I have so much to be thankful for and you, first graders, are top on my list. Have a wonderful holiday with your family and friends.

PJ Day

Dear Class,

Boy did we rock in our comfy PJ's today!

I continue to be impressed with how well you know your shapes.  Yesterday, we worked on making composite shapes by putting together shapes.  You first graders sure are creative.  Keep working on identifying those tricky new shapes by name (trapezoid and hexagon).

We also have been learning a lot about Thanksgiving. I was impressed with how you worked with a buddy to compare and contrast the first Thanksgiving to todays! Great thinking!!

Shhhhhhhh.... shapes!

Dear First Graders,

Boy was I impressed with all your great thinking with our shapes lesson today!

We learned about Open and Closed (no openings, corners and sides meet) shapes!   We also made open and closed shapes with 3 straws and 4 straws.

Last week, we celebrated our one friend's birthday a week early since she is traveling this week.

Mr. D also came in to kick off his blog about his BIG goal.  Check it out:  goo.gl/6SJyED

Plus we had two mystery reader over the last two weeks!  Wow, we have been busy!

Happy Halloween

Dear Trick or Treaters,

Happy Halloween!

Did I to scare the Tuna Salad out of you with our Mystery Bags. It was a fun way to practice both our investigation of textures as well as using great adjectives to describe items.

Try scaring the Tuna Salad out of your parents with our rhyme monsters we made!

What about Miss Sabourin with her amazing haunted gym...

Have fun trick or treating tonight!  I loved the song Mrs. Johnston taught in music this week... Keep it in mind as you have a safe Halloween.

Tune of: I'm a Little Tea Pot

I'm a Trick or Treater set to go!
Here is my flashlight, I'll walk slow.
I always say thank-you for my treats
And I never run across the street!!

Parents, are you wondering what all this talk is about Tuna Salad... it came from a book by one of our favorite authors!
