What's the Value?

Dear Third Graders,

We started this week off strong.  We will continue to ask ourselves, "What's the value of the digit?" as we explore more about place value. I really enjoyed you playing our place value game.  Parents, this is a great game to play at home. We have been making 5 digit numbers, but you can make 6 or 7 or 8 or you name it!  Decide how many digit number you will make. Each player draws that many lines. Then take turns rolling a die.  If it lands on 4, each player places a 4 in one of the spaces. The goal is to make the biggest number!  We are also working on reading our number aloud correctly and making our value strips as you can see in the photos below!

In writing, we will be delving into our Writer's Workshop launching unit next week. We will be decorating our composition notebooks with "inspiration" that we bring from home. A letter went home today describing the assignment (and a copy is in our September folder). You want to look for pictures, stickers, words... that will inspire you to create small moments, poems, informational text, and more. We talked today that I LOVE turtles, but one picture/sticker is all I need to inspire me to write about turtles. I will be taping over these so our inspiration lasts the year. Please send these items in by next Monday!  I can't wait!
This is an example of mine!

Here we are exploring our "bins" that we will use to help ease us into the day! These will be out from about 7:45-8:05 most days.

Happy Monday (and Bear Hugs!),
