Fire Safety

Dear Third Graders,

Have you gone over your exit plans in case of a fire?  Most of us know our house number and street address.  There were a handful of friends that do not know one phone number for a parent. Keep practicing this!

Our local fireman visited and taught us more about fire safety.

There is an open house October 26th at both the Balltown Road and Troy Road Stations!

For our Friday Challenge, we had to work as a team to create a spider web to help decorate our classroom.  All groups were successful.

Bear Hugs,

Smile!

Dear Third Graders,

Dr. DeLuke came to visit us and taught us a lot about having a healthy smile. He talked a lot about the importance of brushing before bed and not eating or drinking anything after.  In addition, one of our October Birthday friends got to dress up as a dentist!

We were prepared for picture day after Dr. DeLuke's visit.

Falling into October!

Dear Third Graders,

October is here and going fast with all these days off and exciting learning in school.  Last week we had two friends with the same birthday!  We enjoyed some yummy treats.

We also had a visit from the Clifton Park Elks Club who gave each third grader their very own dictionaries.  These will stay in their desk and come home at the end of the year. We have been having fun finding the longest word, reading facts about presidents, states, and more!

September Wrap Up!

Dear Third Graders,

We have been hard at work collecting our writing ideas. We did a nice job decorating our writer's journals with pictures that we can use to help us pull out stories.

This week we got to do a museum share with our writer's notebook with Mrs. Neufeld and Mrs. O'Connell's classes. We will also get to bring these home to share with our parents soon too (just don't forget to send them right back!)

In reading, we have been focused on Author's Purpose:  P.I.E.  Persuade, Inform, or Entertain. We zoomed in on each purpose throughout the week. On Friday, we worked in small groups to read excerpts from different books and use what we read to determine the author's purpose for writing.  Wonderful Work!

We ended the week with another Friday Challenge.  This week, our goal was to listen to others and encourage our teammates. We continue to work on dividing tasks and responsibilities as we raced to use 10 index cards and a yard of tape to make the tallest structure!

Our October bulletin all ready to go! Our focus for geography is where we are in the world. This ties in nicely with Fire Safety month. It is important that you know your address and one of your parents phone numbers (or landline if you have one!).

Bear Hugs,

The Sorting Hat

Dear Hogwarts Students,

Did you tell someone at home what house you are going to be in this year?!?!  A big thank-you goes out to Miss Sabourin for orchestrating all the details that helped to bring the Sorting Hat to Rosendale!

Here are some candid shots from P.E.!

Help Harry

Dear Third Graders,

Our "Harrys" are very happy now that they have their new perches and can watch over us as we learn! I hope you are taking good care of the little Harrys you earned through your teamwork and persistence. A big shout out goes to www.theteacherstudio.com for this idea!

The task: Build a perch for Harry so he can more easily see around our classroom.

The materials: 2-4 pipe cleaners, 2 index cards, 2 cupcake holders, a cup, foil and a foot of painters tape

The Task:  2 minutes to brainstorm and share ideas.
                     14 minutes to build.

     The results are as follows!

Yesterday, we had read this great book about how we each bring unique skills to our team that can help us succeed.

That it is important to encourage our teammates, offer helpask for helpparticipate equally, and stay on task

And earlier this week, Mrs. Halayko taught us about how we all face different challenges but there are ways that individuals can get more help like extra time, working with an adult, assistive technology, and peers!

Today, we learned a new math game to help us practice our doubles. Knowing our doubles helps us add and subtract quickly. We can learn strategies like doubles plus one! Here is the doubles rap video that is a great way to practice!  Here are some action shots. I'll be sending some friends home with some resources to help them learn their doubles next week.

We also celebrated a friend's birthday today!  We sure have been busy in third grade!
